Data mob: Olympics are go!

Thanks to all those who helped get our athlete count up to 1029 (from 500ish) last week.

Now the Olympics are on, our only main mob task will be to keep Freebase up to date with competitors and medal winners.

Freebase’s Olympic coverage — if you want to call it that — can be found at 2008 Summer Olympics. Along with the 1000+ athletes, we’ve got 294 events, 27 venues in Beijing and elsewhere, and we’re starting to fill in some of the medalists for events that have already occurred.

For the next two weeks, join us in tracking the Olympic competitions.

First up, let’s get some dates into the graph.

As the Olympics progress, you can go back to the Freebase schedule, find an event that’s occurred, and go fill in the medalists. Here’s one I’ve done already: Archery at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women’s team.

The best way to track progress on this one is probably just the stats on the Olympics domain. At the moment we have 35,279 topics and 47,565 facts. Let’s see how we’re looking on August 24th, at the end of the games.

Between now and then I’ll be posting updates to show what we’ve got.
