Al, from our data team, recently put together a great app with Acre. It’s a Genealogy Viewer for people on Freebase, and shows the parents, children, dates of birth and death of people on Freebase.
For instance, take a look at:
- Queen Elizabeth II’s genealogy (shown above; click to enlarge)
- Brad Pitt’s genealogy
- Abraham’s genealogy (yeah, the Biblical one)
Click on any person’s rectangle to re-centre and add their connections to the chart. To add or edit a person’s data, click on the person’s name at the top of the page to go to their Freebase topic page.
Of course, since this is an Acre app, you can see how it’s done and even clone the app for your own use or improvement if you like!

Wow, that’s really cool. Are we allowed to use that graph rendering service in our own mash-ups? From what I can tell, you just post your data as a GraphViz DOT file and it sends back a link to the rendered PNG?

narphorium: Feel free to use the service in your own ACRE apps. It’s available at http://graphviz.mqlx.com/ and you can see how to use it in my code: simply post your dot data and you’ll receive JSON containing “imageurl” and “imagemap”.

hm.. I am trying to get the whole genealogical data with a single name query…. Currently, the app seems have some ‘maxdepth’ limit. I can’t find a good answer. Does somebody have some idea??
