As of today, we’re very pleased to announce that Metaweb is now a part of Google.
“Whoah… what’s going to happen to Freebase?” you might ask. Well, we’re also extremely pleased to be able to say “nothing”…. or rather, nothing other than getting better, and yes, even more open. As a first step toward that last point, we’re also happy to announce today that we have increased the frequency of our downloadable database dumps from quarterly to weekly.
We hope both announcements will encourage even more individuals, institutions and companies to use and contribute to Freebase. We believe that the more we can all work together on cataloging and connecting the “graph of everything,” the smarter the web will get.
As for the Metaweb product line, we will continue to support all of our existing partners, but we won’t be taking on new ones while we work with the Google team to deliver new and innovative ways to make the web smarter by linking content with entities. No idea what we mean by that? Then check out the fun video below.
You can also read more in Google’s announcement on their blog.
Yours,
The Metaweb Team

Hi guys,
this is great news, congratulations!
Also great news for ‘linked data’ in general! We’re excited to use even more data from Freebase in the future, just keep it going!

@hangy: There is a bit about that in Google’s blog post, which should give you some idea of the sort of thing they have in mind.

Hangy asks: “Any idea on how Google will use Freebase data or wants to profit from it?”
Did Google use YouTube for anything or profit from it?
Do they care, or is owning it enough?
Hopefully, Google will do something more interesting than merely owning Freebase.
BTW the video here is a great introduction to the web of linked data. Well done. I wonder if this was always there, or if it was recent, driven by the Google merger.

Congratulations.
Seems like the $57M were well invested.
I just hope that freebase won’t go the BumpTop way…

Congratulations! I think it will be exciting both for you and Google. Can’t wait to see your name entities in SERPs

This is terrific news. Hopefully this will allow Google to be able to identify the many nicknames and spellings of terms, cities, and people so that I do not have to use the many variations of an “identity” in one website file. And much more!
This is an excellent company for Google to acquire and a project that I hope works to better the content management and retrieval of information via Google. Thanks everyone on both sides.

Congrats all!
interested to watch the integration
